Director of Maintenance and Operations

Job Description

DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS, Facilities-Repair and Maintenance (R&M), to lead the R&M and R&M Operations areas.  Will be responsible for the global picture while understanding and monitoring the everyday details and operations throughout the campus.  Responsibilities include acting as a sounding board/mentor to managers; fostering collaboration and ensuring division strategies are aligned across the department and MIT; the ongoing assessment of maintenance and operation services; establishing best practices; overseeing department finances, data, and performance KPIs and metrics; assuring a cooperative team-oriented approach to the maintenance process; and assessing performance and workloads and adjusting accordingly.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  B.S. in engineering; ten years’ relevant experience and hands-on technical experience with mechanical, control, electrical, and operations of building and utility systems; at least seven years’ experience in a union environment; knowledge of engineering principles, building trades, safety, lockout-tagout programs, QA/QC practices, and energy savings and sustainability; experience with large capital projects, smaller renovation and campus renewal activities, short- and long-term campus master planning, maintenance planning, engineering, and architecture; experience managing multidisciplinary maintenance teams and a unionized workforce; experience with maintenance management and building management systems; experience in a customer service environment; excellent interpersonal skills; flexibility and openness when considering solutions and strategy development; attention to detail; data-driven approach to strategic decisions; and ability to understand complex budgets and contractual agreementsMust be able to foster a positive work environment and lead a group of engineers and other staff in a team-centered organization, develop relationships across MIT and understand the positions of multiple stakeholders with varying perspectives/objectives, and convey technical information to non-technical individuals.  PREFERRED:  advanced degree and registered professional engineer (PE) in Massachusetts.  Job #23267-13
