The Clinical Studies Core offers resources and expertise to facilitate clinical research at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
The mission of the Clinical Studies Core is to support interactions between clinical and basic research groups within North Carolina State University and to expand collaborative relationships beyond the university with practicing veterinarians, animal owners, and industry partners.

Essential Job Duties
Under the direction of the CVM Manager of Research Support Services and Core Laboratories Program Director, the Clinical Studies Core (CSC) Manager will oversee the day-to-day organizational management of the CSC. The manager supervises a team of coordinators who provide clinical research support for clinical trials throughout the veterinary hospital. The successful candidate in this position will be responsible for all the administrative aspects of management and operations of the CSC and they will also provide hands-on technical assistance to projects run through the CSC as needed.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Management and oversight of all clinical studies run through the CSC
- Ensure that all CSC patients receive high quality care
- Train and coach staff in related policies, procedures, and patient care including hands on technical training as needed
- Create study budgets and study work plans, track time spent on studies and ensure resources are being used efficiently
- Assist with the generation of study documents
- Design and optimize SOPS
- Assist with clinical trials: recruit patients, collect biological samples, coordinate and schedule patient visits, enter study data
- Coordinate multiple schedules to allow for optimal flow of clinical studies
Some projects will require more technical research duties such as extraction of DNA and RNA from biological specimens, isolating PBMCs, and general laboratory maintenance
Minimum Education and Experience
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or an undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience in canine/feline veterinary clinical medicine is required.
- Experience in animal handling/restraint, venipuncture, biological sample collection and processing is required.
- Experience in clinical research, and Good Clinical Practice is highly preferred, as is a good understanding or experience with running clinical trials.
- The ability to independently collect data and maintain accurate records in both written and digital form is essential, as is the ability to instruct others on doing this.
- Ability to support, develop, design, and/or execute moderately complex research activities for numerous research projects under the general guidance of multiple Principal Investigators.
- These activities will include budget development for grants and participation in formulating research methods by suggesting options for improving quality of study designs and recommending solutions for efficient and effective data collection.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting
- Previous supervisory experience
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Licensed/Registered/Certified by any State
Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician Program
Valid NC Driver's License required
NoCommercial Driver's License required
