Position Title: Chief Executive Officer
Reporting to: Board of Directors (“Board”)
Status: Exempt
Direct Reports: COO, CDO, CFO (Stephen Center currently outsources), Accounting Manager, Executive Assistant, Food Service Director, SR Expansion Director
Job Summary: The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the strategic leadership and operational management of Stephen Center (“SC”), ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards within budgetary guidelines. This role encompasses overseeing program services, strategic management, financial oversight, and community and public relations.
Essential Job Functions:
- Model strong, empathetic leadership at SC. Further a culture of positivity, honesty, and helpfulness. Lead and develop a high-performing and motivated team, drive employee engagement, and develop and implement a comprehensive recruitment and retention strategy.
- Develop and articulate organizational strategies for the SC to expand and improve services that align with the SC’s mission, while promoting operational excellence.
- Lead development for SC’s capital campaigns and the enhancement of grant and fundraising initiatives to increase overall donor contributions. Foster relationships with donor organizations, key stakeholders, governmental and private fundraising bodies, shelters and other community agencies, staff, and clients to support SC’s growth and development.
- Lead the development and execution of a multi-faceted brand awareness campaign, leveraging external connections and strategic partnerships to expand donor support and cultivate deeper community engagement.
- Develop, coordinate, and oversee SC’s operating budget, profit and losses, business processes, and timely financial reporting.
- Guide strategic planning, policy development, and staff goals to carry out SC’s mission and drive continuous improvement.
- Maintain and administer agency personnel policies and recommend changes when needed, handle staff discipline and grievances fairly and effectively, and be a positive role model for all staff members.
- Oversee the SC’s shelter, transitional housing, and recovery programs to ensure these programs meet the changing needs of the community and align with best practice in the field.
- Report to and work with the Board and related committees to promote good corporate governance, provide transparency on organizational issues, policy planning, and committee/task force work. Ensure the Board is informed of major developments, policy issues requiring action, and support effective Board membership through recruitment and follow-through on assigned tasks.
- Oversee the planning and execution of campus expansion projects, including property acquisition.
Education/Experience/Skills
- Degree in business administration, social work, public policy or equivalent work experience
- 5-7 years of a leadership role, preferably non-profit or organization of similar size
- Proven track record of success in building and leading high-performing teams, improving operational efficiency, and fundraising
- Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong relationship-building and networking skills to foster and build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
- Established community relationships
- Proven success in using data to develop a clear plan, track progress, measure impact, and inform decision-making
- Embody a spirit that positively impacts the mission
- Technology proficient especially in Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.

Salary Range: Starting at $140,000

Stephen Center, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, has served homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha since 1984 with the mission to partner with the community, families and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty. The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing offerings provide safe and secure housing while individuals and families complete an assessment of permanent housing options. All Stephen Center residents have access to dual diagnosis support services via the HERO addiction/recovery program. 100% of Stephen Center shelter supportive housing participants are living in poverty. Housing transition support identifies poverty barriers that may impact one’s ability to achieve or maintain permanent housing through case management, life skills, and behavioral health services.
