Class Description
Lead Custodian I direct and coordinates a variety of cleaning and housekeeping tasks related to the upkeep of and maintaining a sanitary environment for the college facilities. Positions available on the following campuses: - Catonsville, 1st shift and 2nd shift (Mon-Fri)
- Dundalk, 2nd shift (Mon-Fri)
- Essex, 2nd shift (Mon-Fri)
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years minimum of institutional or commercial custodian experience.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Flexibility and ability to change shift when requested.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record of less than five (5) points on driving record.
- Ability to participate in bloodborne pathogens training within six (6) months of employment.
- Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed waiver.

Background Check:- Candidates may be required to successfully pass a background investigation, to include driving, fingerprint and criminal history evaluation.
- Candidates may be required to successfully complete a pre-hire, post-offer physical examination, including drug screening.
Class Specific Essential Duties
- Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning practices, cleaning terms, and chemical usage and safety procedures related to hazardous substances.
- Knowledge of planning, organizing and coordinating all aspects of the overall custodial functions.
- Experience directing the work of others.
- Ability to detect or assess situations and to know when to take appropriate actions in case of an emergency.
- Ability to orally communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
- Ability to listen and comprehend information and ideas presented through verbal communications.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
- Ability to use mechanically powered cleaning equipment properly, safely and efficiently.
- Ability to perform physical job duties such as handling trash/recycling s, unloading supplies and moving heavy equipment and furniture.
- Must have the ability to work independently, without close supervision.
- Computer knowledge and experience.
- Due to nature of the position and frequent contact, candidates should have a command of the English language.
Position Specific Essential Duties
- Oversees the work performance of assigned custodians to ensure cleaning services are completed to department-defined standards.
- Maintains quality standards in accomplishment of non-routine cleaning and emergencies.
- Assigns personnel to established work area and project areas.
- Adjusts employee work schedules due to absences, vacant positions, or other interruptions to ensure daily work requirements are completed.
- Responds to stakeholder concerns/request and takes necessary action to resolve them including timely follow up.
- Instructs and assists staff in cleaning procedures, techniques, cleaning issues and in the use of new methods and products.
- Gives corrective instruction or re-training in the proper use of clean methods, equipment, and safety. Conducts on-the-job training of staff, when needed and appropriate.
- Ensures that proper supply guidelines are followed and staff is trained in use of all chemicals. Monitors safety of the workplace and ensures proper PPE are worn by staff.
- Responsible for conducting project work as directed by supervisor, either as an individual, or as a member of a work group, is completed in a timely manner.
- Reports supply and maintenance needs, and obtains and distributes supplies.
- Performs duties of a custodian, as needed or as directed.
- Participates in snow removal or duties as assigned in response to college emergencies, as necessary and/or directed.
- Effectively performs in a service environment and follows all county, state, college and departmental policies, procedures and practices.
