About the Department

The MRL is located in Asheville, NC and the Director- MRL keeps in contact with the North Carolina and United States mineral industry to define the needs of the industry and to initiate research projects. The work of the MRL, like the overall work of Industry Expansion Solutions (IES), is accomplished by developing and delivering superior professional education and technical assistance programs that meet the needs of engineers and technical professionals in the mining and minerals industry and by advocating the use of engineering science and technology and best practices to promote corporate growth and the production of quality products. IES is a state-wide university-based economic development organization specifically chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly to transfer knowledge and technology to the North Carolina industry to support global competitiveness.

Essential Job Duties

This position is responsible for executing project work for mining clients, managing the scheduling of resources and equipment, and ensuring the efficient operation of lab activities. IES is integral to North Carolina’s economic development, promoting the application of engineering, science, and technology across industries, businesses, and public agencies to improve safety, quality, productivity, and environmental sustainability. The MRL partners with mining companies, exploration geologists, and government agencies to advance the use of minerals and improve processing technologies. For over 70 years, the lab has supported mining companies in North America and beyond by enhancing process efficiency, developing new products, and improving the quality of existing products.

Reporting to the MRL Director, this position’s key responsibilities include:
  • Designing and costing metallurgical processes in consultation with clients.
  • Managing client projects and grant activities.
  • Overseeing the lab’s daily operations, including administrative tasks.
  • Learning and applying the lab’s budgeting and accounting systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Additionally, this position may involve teaching mineral processing courses at UNC-Asheville’s Environmental Studies Department.

Other Responsibilities

This position may supervise students as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis. 
  • Five years of industrial mining experience

  • A strong work ethic 
  • Willingness to travel
  • High proficiency in the use of personal computer

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s Degree in Mineral Processing, with ten years’ experience with industrial minerals pilot plant facilities.
