The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) is a UNC inter-institutional research institute whose primary focus is to promote the discovery of new knowledge about global, regional, and local climate variability and its impacts; and to provide information that is critical for determining trends and validating climate forecasts at all these spatial scales. A primary activity of NCICS is the operation of the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth Systems Science (CISESS) formed through a consortium of academic, non-profit, and community organizations with leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and North Carolina State University (NCSU) on behalf of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System. CISESS provides foci for collaborative research and associated activities in support of NOAA mission goals related to meteorological satellite and climate data and information research and development.
Essential Job Duties
The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) is seeking a Climate & Health Project Coordinator with expertise in epidemiologic analysis to support cutting-edge research at the intersection of climate and public health. We are looking for candidates with a strong background in environmental epidemiology, biostatistics, or related fields such as environmental sciences or population health research.
The person in this position will perform a variety of project activities including study coordination, epidemiologic analyses, and support community engaged research and population-based studies focused on climate and health. The position will be housed by North Carolina State University’s North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) in Asheville, NC. NCICS is co-located with NOAA’s National Center for Environmental Information and is a lead partnering institution for the Carolinas Collaborative on Climate, Health, and Equity (C3HE).
The person in this position will perform a variety of project activities including study coordination, epidemiologic analyses, and support community engaged research and population-based studies focused on climate and health. The Climate & Health Project Coordinator will work closely with Dr. Jennifer Runkle, performing a variety of activities including:
1. Research
1. Research
- Participate in data cleaning and epidemiologic analysis using data collected from community surveys or health system administrative data.
- Participate in quantitative and/or qualitative data analyses to describe utilization of and outcomes relevant to community needs.
- Prepare data summaries and reports for internal and external audiences, including tables, charts, and graphs.
- Present research findings and/or assist in the preparation of publications of research results for peer-reviewed journals.
2. Project Coordination
- Coordinate research and community engagement activities with new community partners.
- Manage end-to-end participant recruitment for research activities.
- Maintain and update Institutional Review Board (IRB) research protocol for each phase of research activities.
- Work cooperatively with Institute staff, partners, team members, and/or external stakeholders to support task and project objectives.
3. Community Engagement
- Coordinate community engagement activities with new community partners (collaborative efforts in research and outreach).
- Maintain confidentiality with sensitive health and internal/community partner information, ensuring trust and transparency with the community.
Minimum Education and Experience
Master’s degree in public health, health sciences, or environmental sciences or related field.
Other Required Qualifications
- Evidence of scholarly productivity, such as journal publications.
- Demonstrated experience in performing self-directed scientific data analysis and applications programming.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Solid interpersonal skills and ability to contribute positively to a team environment.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
- Ability to learn new skills quickly and apply them to the research process.
- Strong commitment to confidentiality and ethical handling of sensitive research information.
- Must be able to work independently and creatively.
- Have the aptitude and willingness to serve the requirements of all team functions.
- Demonstrate strong technical aptitude and ability to research and solve complex issues independently.
- Demonstrate willingness and ability to learn and apply new skills as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong interest in environmental epidemiology and community engaged research.
- Experience with epidemiologic data analysis.
- Well-organized self-starter with a keen eye for detail and an ability to ramp up quickly.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects with different stakeholders and varying timelines.
- Ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong communication/relationship skills to work effectively across teams.
- Creative problem-solver who is willing to work with and support a new institute focused on climate, health, and equity in the region.
- Two or more peer-reviewed publications in environmental sciences or a related area.
- Experience in an academic research setting.
